The U.S. federal government is headed for a shutdown following a pair of failed votes as both Senate Democrats and Republicans blocked each other's proposal.

Senate Republicans pushed a continuing resolution passed by the House GOP that would keep the government funded through Nov. 21. Democrats wanted broader concessions, including an extension of healthcare subsidies adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic, restoring $1 trillion for Medicare, and restrictions on President Donald Trump's ability to claw back congressional appropriations.

The GOP plan failed in a 55-to-45 vote, with all Republicans but Kentucky's Sen. Rand Paul voting for it. The vote fell short of the 60 needed for passage. The Republicans scuttled the Democratic plan in a 47-to-53 vote.
