Queensland's largest coal-fired power station may close earlier than planned. Rio Tinto announced today that CS Energy informed the Australian Energy Market Operator that the Gladstone Power Station could potentially shut down in March 2029. This notification aligns with the National Electricity Rules, which require a 3.5-year notice for the closure of electricity generators.
Rio Tinto stated, "No final decision has been made to retire GPS, which has operated since 1976, and there is potential to extend the life of the power station should market and other factors allow." Despite the potential early closure, there are currently no plans to reduce the plant's power output before March 2029, as multiple contracts remain in effect.
The original closure date for the Gladstone Power Station was set for 2035. In the meantime, the joint venture participants plan to engage with stakeholders regarding the energy market and explore options for the future use of the site. This engagement will help shape the timeline and strategy for the facility's retirement.
The announcement marks a significant shift in the future of coal energy in Queensland, as the region continues to navigate the transition to renewable energy sources. Stakeholders will be closely monitoring developments as the potential closure date approaches.
