GILBERT, Ariz. — Nancy Stipp was stunned when she opened her most recent bill and saw a total of $2,679.
“My husband and I went to the town of Gilbert’s utility department with my bill,” Stipp said. “I use consistently 30 to 40,000 gallons of water a month. But this bill came at 292,000 gallons.”
Several Gilbert homeowners say their water bills have suddenly spiked, leaving them with charges that far exceed what they believe they actually used.
Stipp's recent bill is an amount larger than many monthly mortgages.
Stipp said she does have a backyard pool and lawn, but her recorded bill jumped more than 1,000% compared to her August 2025 bill, which was approximately $270. In response, the town sent crews to her home on Tuesday and replaced her water meter. But Stipp questions whether fau
