Chennai: In a tragic industrial accident, at least nine workers lost their lives and over thirty were injured after a section of a façade suddenly collapsed at the Ennore Thermal Power Plant on Monday. The victims, who were reportedly from northern states like Assam, were working at a height of approximately 45 feet when the structure gave way, plunging them to the ground.
The incident occurred at the construction site of a new unit within the Ennore Special Economic Zone, where work was underway to build a massive arch. According to officials, about 3,200 workers, a majority from northern India, are employed at the site. CITU state vice-president Vijayan, commenting on the safety lapse, stated that the workers were wearing safety belts, but they fell along with the collapsing structure.
