INDIAN ISLAND -- September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, a day to remember and reflect on children who were abused or killed in residential school programs.

Orange Shirt Day is also known as the Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The observance began in Canada, but the Penobscot Nation is bringing the tradition a bit further south to honor children who were abused or killed in boarding schools throughout history.

"We lost a generation of kids that were taken out of their communities, and put into the boarding schools, and unfortunately, a lot of them died there," explained Penobscot Nation Director of Social Services Michael Augustine.

The children that didn't lose their lives lost their cultures. Penobscot people say many abused children were punished if they spoke their native languages,
