Shyamkanu Mahanta, a festival organiser, and Siddhartha Sharma, the manager of the late singer-actor Zubeen Garg, have been arrested in Delhi and taken to Guwahati. Reports indicate that Mahanta had been hiding in Singapore prior to his arrest. Lookout notices had been issued for both men, requiring them to report to the CID office in Guwahati by October 6.
Mahanta was detained upon his arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi from Singapore, while Sharma was arrested from an apartment in Gurgaon. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already questioned several individuals connected to Zubeen, including his drummer Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, his brother Sandipon Garg, actress Nishita Goswami, and local TV channel owner Sanjive Narain, all of whom were in Singapore at the time of Zubeen's death.
Assam's Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, stated that the investigation is being conducted transparently under the guidance of the chief minister. He mentioned that one team from the SIT/CID is currently in Delhi, while another will travel to Singapore. The Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) process is also in progress. Singh urged the people of Assam to trust the police, assuring them that the investigation will reach a logical conclusion within a week. He emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold and extending full support to the authorities.
Zubeen Garg, a prominent figure in Assamese music and cinema, tragically passed away on September 19 due to a scuba diving accident in Singapore. His remains were flown to Delhi and subsequently transported to Guwahati on Sunday morning by a commercial flight.
