COLUMBUS — Ohio Auditor Keith Faber formally requested state Attorney General Dave Yost to launch legal proceedings to appoint a receiver for East Cleveland, a move aimed at resolving chronic financial problems in the city.
The next step in the process is for the Attorney General’s office to file a petition with the Ohio Court of Claims to appoint a receiver.
Faber’s request is permitted under a new state law that went into effect Tuesday for communities that have been unable to address fiscal emergency declarations for extended periods. Faber notified the city of his plan on Monday. If the receivership is ultimately granted, East Cleveland would become the first city placed under a receivership under the new law.
