BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - For the past month, you may have gotten sick or know someone who’s gotten sick. Respiratory illnesses seemed to be spreading like wildfire.

Though it’s not yet cool outside, some sicknesses are already spreading. While flu hasn’t made much of an impact on our community yet, some hospitals saw quite a large number of COVID patients over the last month.

“I think at one point at UAB, we were upwards of almost 25% or 20% of the tests were positive for COVID, so a lot of COVID in the community and if you think of people who are at risk for getting admitted to the hospital, those would be people who are older, immunocompromised, so we did see kind of an uptick,” said Dr. Rachael Lee, a professor of medicine within the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases.
