SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Springfield City Council unanimously passed a plan Tuesday night to accept a $1.1 million grant to improve the City Water Light and Power energy grid infrastructure.

The grant is funded by federal dollars passed through the Illinois Finance Authority. The grant will cover the majority of the $1.67 million project, which citizens will not have to pay for.

Chief Utility Engineer Doug Brown said the grant will be used to improve the infrastructure of the grid.

"We're going to do that by modernizing our existing infrastructure with replacing circuit breakers, reclosers [and] underground vault-mounted switches," Brown said.

Brown explained that the project will improve real-time monitoring and improve restoration time.
