Raising the income cap upon which Social Security payments are based makes sense. What doesn't make sense is a person making $40,000 a year paying a higher percentage of their salary into Social Security than a person making $400,000 a year.
If the cap of $176,100 was raised to $250,000, the impact would be significant, immediate and fair.
I will not hold my breath waiting for common sense to kick in. As Godfrey pointed out, nobody is even talking about this idea as a way of solving the underfunding.
