ZEARING, Iowa —
Congress is facing a deadline to prevent a government shutdown, with lawmakers having until 11 p.m. Iowa time to reach a resolution, which could have significant effects on farmers in Northern Story County, Iowa, who are currently harvesting corn and soybeans.
Nevada farmer Tim Couser is keeping a close watch on both his soybean fields and the news of a possible government shutdown.
"A government shutdown short-term for farmers does not have a dramatic impact," Couser said. He explained that while most farmers can endure a shutdown for a while, there is concern about the future of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its programs, loans, and crop reports.
