Streets on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza turned to muddy rivers Tuesday, after a deluge of rain caused widespread flooding.

Local authorities issued a red alert for rain early Tuesday for the islands of Ibiza as well as Formentera, where up to 180mm of rain is expected within 12 hours.

Footage from Ibiza shows vehicles almost entirely submerged, while locals waded through deep water on the island's main road.

Local authorities said firefighters were deployed to assist people believed to be trapped inside their vehicles and homes.

Weather alerts are also in place for Mallorca, another Balearic island, as well as on the Spanish mainland in Valencia.

A year ago, more than 230 people were killed in Valencia in floods.
