TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - With the government officially shut down, people are bracing for the impacts.

Democrats in the senate refused to vote for a bill that would fund the government for several weeks, and intend to vote down similar bills unless Republicans in congress extend tax credits for lower-income families and roll back cuts on Medicaid, which will go into effect by the end of this year.

With the shutdown now in full swing, Democrats hope this will put increasing pressure on their Republican colleagues.

Senate Democrats want Republicans to take action to protect Medicaid, but Republicans argued they needed the government open and funded to discuss those issues over the next seven weeks.
