The US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (ED’s OCR) and the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (HHS’ OCR) announced Tuesday that the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) are in violation of federal law for allowing male athletes to compete in female sports and use female-designated facilities. In a joint Notice of Violation, the federal agencies concluded that MDE and MSHSL had violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs.
