Police are actively searching for Dezi Freeman, the alleged gunman involved in the shooting deaths of two police officers. The search is focused on the area around Benalla, located in Victoria's northeast, approximately 85 kilometers west of Porepunkah, where the incident occurred on August 26.
Currently, more than 200 police officers are engaged in the search efforts, a reduction from about 500 officers deployed immediately after the shooting. Victoria Police stated that today's operation in Benalla is part of a planned initiative.
A police spokesperson reassured the public, saying, "There is no immediate risk to community safety and further information will be provided once operationally appropriate to do so." They emphasized that the search is part of the ongoing investigation into the events surrounding the shooting in Porepunkah.
As of now, authorities have not confirmed any sightings of Freeman, despite receiving hundreds of tips from the public. A reward of $1 million is being offered for information leading to his arrest, marking the largest reward of its kind in Victoria's history. The search continues as police remain vigilant in their efforts to locate Freeman.
