Delhi has been identified as India's crime capital according to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In 2023, the city recorded 1508.9 cases of Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes per lakh population. Kerala follows with 721.7 IPC cases per lakh. In contrast, Jharkhand reported the fewest cases, with only 126.6 per lakh, making Delhi nearly 12 times more unsafe than Jharkhand and Kerala about six times more unsafe.
However, the situation takes a surprising turn when it comes to murder rates. The likelihood of being murdered in Jharkhand is approximately one and a half times higher than in Delhi and nearly three times higher than in Kerala. This raises questions about the accuracy of crime reporting in Jharkhand, suggesting that the state may be underreporting other crimes while having a troubling murder rate.
Delhi ranks first in overall crime but is eighth in murder rates, while Kerala is second in overall crime and 22nd in murder rates. Jharkhand, however, is 22nd in overall crime but ranks first in murder rates. Other states like Punjab and Assam also show discrepancies, ranking 19th and 20th in overall crime but 7th and 4th in murder rates, respectively.
States such as Haryana, Telangana, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu exhibit a smaller gap between their overall crime rates and murder rates, indicating a more accurate capture of crime data. This highlights the complexities of crime statistics in India and the importance of reliable reporting for understanding safety across different regions.
