Police have confirmed that eight people died and five others were injured after a gold mine collapsed in the Mfumu Suza area of Kasungu District on Tuesday.

Kasungu Police spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said the five injured individuals were rushed to Kasungu District Hospital for medical treatment. He, however, did not disclose the total number of miners who were underground at the time of the incident.

Local traditional leader, Chief Mfumu Suza, revealed that authorities have repeatedly warned residents against mining in the area due to safety concerns. Despite the warnings, some continue to operate in the mine, driven by financial hardship.

Efforts to determine whether more people remain trapped underground are ongoing, as rescue teams and community members continue to search the site.
