Four people have died of West Nile virus so far this year in South Dakota, according to the state health department's dashboard .
There had been 74 human cases reported statewide in 2025 as of Sept. 26. South Dakota also reported four deaths from West Nile virus in 2023, when a total of 96 human cases were detected in the state, according to a health department report .
Nationally, 42 states had reported a total of 1,137 human cases of West Nile virus as of Sept. 23, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
