A day after Gov. Jeff Landry requested that the Department of Justice activate 1,000 National Guard troops to be sent to Louisiana cities, some Baton Rouge leaders voiced support while others blasted the idea, and many wanted to see more details.
One leader wanting more information is Mayor-President Sid Edwards, though he said additional help could provide "much-needed boots on the ground" and could help bridge the gap amid a shortage of 100 local police officers.
"Should troops be stationed in Baton Rouge, I will work to ensure they act in a supportive role rather than a replacement for our local police officers," Edwards, a Republican, said in a statement Tuesday.
Edwards' statement was issued after all five Democratic members of the East Baton Rouge Metro Council urged him to stand
