CONCORD, N.H. —
The federal government shut down at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday after members of Congress failed to reach a compromise to keep the government funded.
Proposals from Democrats and Republicans to keep the government funded both fell short of the 60 votes needed in the Senate.
A proposal from Democrats fell 53-47 on a party-line vote Tuesday evening. Afterward, a U.S. House measure pushed by Republicans failed on a 55-45 vote.

While the Republican proposal did receive votes from three senators who caucus with Democrats, Democratic U.S. Sens. Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen, of New Hampshire, voted against it.
