Rent controls are set to be introduced in Scotland to cap sky-high rents as MSPs voted through the new Housing (Scotland) Bill to create a “gold standard” homelessness prevention system .

Holyrood approved the legislation on Tuesday (30 September) evening – more than a year after the Scottish government declared a housing emergency . The bill will now head for royal assent before it is implemented.

The new law will introduce Awaab’s Law to force landlords to fix health hazards to strict timeframes, starting with damp and mould . That will come into force across Scotland’s rented sector next March.

A homelessness prevention system will require public bodies to “ask and act” to prevent people from losing their homes.
