Two teen girls were seriously hurt when they were hit while attempting to cross Highway 8 in Stoney Creek Tuesday.

The girls, aged 13 and 14, initially made it half way across the road – near the Fortinos plaza just west of Grey Road – and were standing on the centre median when vehicles in one lane of traffic stopped to let them cross, said Const. Adam Kimber.

As they ran across they were hit by a vehicle in the farthest right westbound lane. The driver remained on scene.

Both girls were taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. One has life-altering injuries.

The road was closed from about 4:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

It is under investigation by the Hamilton police collision reconstruction unit.
