LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Some eligible seniors in Lauderdale County may qualify to be exempt from rising property taxes.

Act 2024-136, allows Lauderdale County residents aged 65 and older to claim a senior property tax exemption.

Requirements for the tax exemption include the following: • Must be 65 years of age or older • Live on the property for at least five years

The exemption freezes the assessed value of the property for tax purposes. This frozen value is set at the level it was in the tax year before the exemption was first claimed.

According to Lauderdale County Revenue Commissioner Billy Hammock, Act 2024-136 was locally voted on and approved during the November 2024 election.

Hammock told News 19 that seniors have until December 31, 2025 to apply for the tax exem
