While Michigan lawmakers avoided a state government shutdown before a midnight deadline on Oct. 1, the federal government did not, forcing a halt to programs that rely on federal funding.

Wednesday, Oct. 1, marks the first day of the U.S. government's shutdown, as well as the first day of the 2026 fiscal year. The shutdown will continue until appropriations are passed in Congress.

In Michigan, lawmakers did not shut down the state , though a 2026 budget was not finalized. State workers will carry on with their jobs across the state as lawmakers hammer out a final budget deal.

The Senate did not pass a continuing resolution that would have provided funding through Nov. 21. The proposal needed 60 votes to pass, it received 55.
