The family of a man who authorities say was fatally stabbed in a Riverside County jail by a violent felon who was placed in a low-security vocational program, giving him access to the murder weapon, are suing the sheriff's department.
Steve De Leon Gonzalez, 36, died on Sept. 7, 2024, after being stabbed with a screwdriver while working in a shop at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. He and other detainees were in a work program in the department's SITE-B, which provides incarcerated people with training and education.
