A major headliner in the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon wheelchair competition dropped out of the race just days before it steps off after suffering an unexpected injury, officials announced Wednesday.

Three-time Chicago Marathon champion Daniel Romanchuk withdrew from the competition after suffering a shoulder injury during an on-course collision with a spectator at this year's TCS Sydney Marathon, organizers said in a release.

“I’m incredibly disappointed that I won’t be able to compete in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon next week due to a recently sustained shoulder injury,” Romanchuk said in a statement. “Chicago was my first major marathon and my first AbbottWMM win, and as a member of the University of Illinois training group, it feels like missing a hometown race."
