MODESTO, Calif. —

A Modesto shelter is at risk of closing next year due to significant state funding cuts.

The Access Center Emergency Shelter, which provides 182 beds for the homeless, relies on the Homeless Housing Assistance and Prevention Grant to fund its operations.

"The HHAP funding has been cut by the state and as a result of that, it's really cutting into how we're going to keep this thing open," said Terry Withrow from the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. "We have about a $3.2 million budget to run it each year and we're losing a substantial amount of that funding."

"Until the issues around that are resolved, it will affect the rest of the shelter's operation for the current fiscal year that we're in, which runs us through to June 30th," explained Darren Stratton, city
