A group of 30 seniors living at Penticton’s Village at the Station long-term care facility were treated to a special Indigenous ceremony Monday morning, ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday observed on Tuesday.

The ceremony included smudging, traditional drumming, and singing, and was led by members of the Williams family from the Penticton Indian Band. Several generations of the family participated, offering an emotional and educational experience for both residents and staff.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, officially established in 2021 with the passing of Bill C-5, is meant to encourage reflection, learning, and dialogue about the ongoing relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.
