As of Oct. 1, the state of Florida is now enforcing stricter DUI laws aimed at keeping repeat offenders off the roads and ensuring harsher consequences for those convicted of vehicular manslaughter.

The new legislation, House Bill 687, is named in honor of Trenton Stewart, an 18-year-old Stetson University football player who was killed in 2023 by a wrong-way driver who was high on drugs.

Stewart had been home visiting family in Jacksonville when he was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver traveling over 100 miles per hour.

The driver who killed Trenton in 2023, Ariel Monteagudo, had a prior conviction for killing a 15-year-old in a reckless driving incident in 2001 and had previously served 10 years in prison.
