RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Josh Stein has appointed Daniel H. Johnson as State Transportation Secretary after the retirement of former Secretary Joey Hopkins.
Johnson has worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for the past 8 years, and previously worked in both public service and private practice as a lawyer.
"I'm excited about becoming Secretary of Transportation," Johnson said. "It's a job that's gonna come with a lot of challenges but a lot of opportunities."
The challenges include reducing wait times at the DMV, road safety and continuing to restore infrastructure to western North Carolina .
"We're $1 billion into a $5 billion challenge," Johnson said. "We've got the second biggest rural population in the nation. Those roads are lifelines for these communities."
