Twenty-five volunteers collected 17 bags of garbage over nearly 1-kilometre of shoreline during a cleanup in Owen Sound Sunday.
It was World Rivers Day and the city was one of six communities to participate in the first Great Lakes Coastal Cleanup, an event co-ordinated by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, a release from the city said.

They cleaned from the sewage treatment plant to the harbour wall, including a section of Kelso Beach.
The cleanup’s aim is to raise awareness about pollution in lakes and rivers, as well as to clean up. An estimated 22 million pounds of plastic enters the Great Lakes annually. This threatens ecosystems, wildlife and drinking water, the release said.
