AUGUSTA, Maine — Several of Maine's elected officials have spoken out since the federal government shut down began Wednesday.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress have been at odds over how to fund the government, particularly health care spending and funding.

The shutdown began just after midnight when Senate Democrats voted against a Republican bill that didn't extend funding for Affordable Care Act credits set to expire at the end of 2025. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees may now be furloughed or laid off. Operations deemed essential—such as student loans, Social Security payments, and the military—will continue.
