Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says Alberta is applying as the proponent for a new pipeline to the northern BC coast. She said she hopes the project will be among Prime Minister Mark Carney's next tranche of projects fast-tracked under Bill C-5.

The province is committing $14 million to the design, but Smith said taxpayers will not be on the hook for the construction costs.

"It would be optimal if a proponent had a clear path to being able to get a project approved without the need to partner with government," Smith said. "But that's not the world we live in."

In a press conference on Wednesday, BC Premier David Eby said the Alberta project, without a private sector proponent, "is not a real project and is incredibly alarming to British Columbians including First Nations along the coast
