The federal government shut down on Wednesday with no clear end date in sight as Congress feuds over funding.
The shuttering will have a near-term impact on federal workers’ paychecks and food benefits — and affect even more people and services should the fight extend.
Nicole Hunt, director of public policy and advocacy at Food Bank for NYC, said the organization is bracing for increased need among New Yorkers struggling to put food on the table. The last pay period for federal workers ends Oct. 4, which means the first check they will miss is Oct. 10 —
