PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Washington authorities were baffled after a three-year-old boy found a live grenade in his family’s front yard that was from the WWII era.

Grant County deputies responded to the home on Willard Street in Hartline around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday after the boy brought the grenade inside to his parents, who called 911.

The deputies immediately asked for bomb squad assistance.

“Bomb techs determined the grenade was live, then carefully removed the device to a rural area north of Hartline and disposed of it,” according to deputies.

Investigators said the grenade was a type used during WWII that “had clearly been exposed to the elements for some time.”

It’s not clear how the grenade ended up in the family’s yard.
