With the start of training camp less than a week away, the Komets made one more big signing to strengthen their blue line.

Veteran defenseman Jalen Smereck will return to where he made his ECHL debut in Fort Wayne, with his signing announced by the team on Wednesday. Smereck spent last season with the Toledo Walleye, helping his team beat the Komets in the Central Division Finals and reach the Kelly Cup Finals.

Smereck had eight goals with 38 assists in the regular season, adding 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in the postseason. Before his stint in Toledo, Smereck had back-to-back seasons with at least 50 points with the Cincinnati Cyclones.

The 28-year-old from Detroit has played 252 career games in the ECHL, as well as 77 AHL games and a season in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in G
