SAULT STE. MARIE — Lake Superior State University has canceled classes for the rest of the week after a power outage and fire caused campus to be evacuated.
The incident took place on Tuesday, Sept. 30 after a power surge affected multiple campus buildings and caused an outage. The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department and Soo Township Fire Department responded to smoke coming from the inside of multiple buildings.
An overnight fire watch was set up to ensure that all campus buildings are checked regularly as electricians work to fix the outage.
Throughout the event, school officials said students have been notified through the use of email and texts. Students have been moved off campus for their safety. Classes are canceled on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
