By the time a University of Houston student was the first to be identified among a string of six bodies found in local bayous, including five in less than a week, some social media users believed there was more to her case than officials were letting on.
Houston officials have confirmed 15 bodies have been recovered from the bayous in 2025, so far. Within days of several bodies being recovered last month, posts on Reddit, YouTube, and Instagram had already pointed to a serial killer. In response to the claims of a potential serial killer, Mayor John Whitmire called a press conference on Sept. 23 to refute the rumors.
