GALESBURG, Ill. (KWQC) - A yearlong court saga ends with a win for the ACLU of Illinois. The Mary Davis Home in Galesburg has been ordered by a federal court to end their solitary confinement practices.
The Mary Davis Home houses teenagers accused of or convicted of crimes in Illinois. Confinement for teenagers is strict under Illinois law and is only allowed for brief periods of time to mitigate physical threats to others and themselves.
The ACLU lawsuit alleges teenagers spent entire days in solitary confinement and were denied mental health treatment during confinement. One person in the lawsuit said people on “suicide watch” were denied access to a counselor.
