Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis feels the province is turning its back on Northern Ontario as the idling of the Kapuskasing Paper Mill threatens 2,500 workers across the region.
On Sept. 29, Kap Paper — which employs about 300 people — announced it would idle operations. The next day, Politis issued a news release declaring his “unwavering support” for the Town of Kapuskasing.

“The ripple effect of this closure is immediate and severe,” he said. “Cochrane’s sawmill will reduce operations to a single shift, with hopes of eventually returning to two shifts as the company realigns lumber processing and chip utilization.
