STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A sign at a local cemetery sparked outrage among Staten Island residents and veterans recently, after it appeared to restrict American flags on graves to just two weeks a year.
The sign at Resurrection Cemetery in Pleasant Plains lists several rules for visitors, including one that states, “Flags for Memorial and Veterans Day may be placed one week prior until one week after the holiday.”
Reading this, many interpreted the rule to mean flags were only permitted at veterans’ graves during these brief time periods.
Among those who expressed concern was Gail McDonald, an Eltingville resident and the wife of a deceased Vietnam-veteran buried at Resurrection Cemetery, who saw an image of the sign on Facebook.
