BROOKLYN — ASSEMBLYMEMBER JAMIE WILLIAMS sparked criticism from fellow Democrats after praising Republican mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa at his Flatbush Avenue campaign office opening, reports the New York Post . Williams called Sliwa “the people’s mayor,” citing his opposition to migrant camps, congestion pricing and dense housing in her southern Brooklyn district, as well as Sliwa’s work with his Guardian Angels anti-crime group.

In an open letter, Canarsie Democracy Club leaders accused her of violating party rules against supporting non-Democrats. Williams later insisted her remarks weren’t an endorsement, describing herself as a “conservative Democrat” unwilling to back Democratic nominee and fellow Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani.
