An iconic statue that stands tall and full of American symbolism in Fort Erie was taken down Tuesday afternoon, but not for political reasons or the ongoing tensions between Canada and the U.S.

Standing atop of Delta Bingo on Garrison Road for decades has been a monument of Uncle Sam, dating back to when the gaming site was known as Uncle Sam’s Bingo.

Signature Sign and Image, a Niagara Falls-based company, was hired to take it down for repainting as well as other touch-ups and maintenance, including welding.

Owner Mark Wallis said it took about three hours to take the 3,600-lb and 36-foot-high character down and laid to rest on a trailer before taking it back to their shop.
