After a wet spring, Maine turned a 180 into a very dry summer and start to autumn. While a summer of sunny days is great for tourism, there are serious drawbacks to the lack of rain.
Maine has been running a strong deficit of rain since the summer. In the last 12 months, there have been about 50 percent of the normal precipitation. This summer was the fifth driest in Portland and the third driest in Bangor, averaging only about five inches of rain the whole summer. For context, the average amount of rain in a summer is about 11 inches.
If you take the entire year to date into account, the numbers are less impressive. It’s the 21st driest year in Portland and the 26th in Bangor.
