Authorities are searching for a prisoner who escaped from a work camp in outback central Queensland.

Tory Ross Rose, 32, went missing in Julia Creek, an outback town with a population of about 550 people east of Mount Isa City, today.

He is currently serving two years and six months for serious assault.

Rose is described as having fair complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair and 176cm tall with a medium build. 

He has tattoos of a name on his inner arm, a name on his wrist, an elk in trees on his upper arm, a tribal design on his inner arm and some hand pieces. 

Queensland Corrective Services and Queensland Police have issued an appeal to the public in the search for him.

Anyone who sees the prisoner is urged not to approach him and call triple-zero immediately.
