It was a sea of orange from Maht Mahs, one of the last remaining buildings of the Alberni Residential School, to the Alberni Athletic Hall as people wearing orange shirts walked for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Tseshaht First Nation hosted the event, with other First Nations in the area joining the walk. Ken Watts is the chief councillor of Tseshaht and said the idea of a walk came about after the discovery at Tk'emlups.
"We knew how important this day was to a lot of people, it kind of took on a whole new meaning given the potential unmarked graves and the work that we would have to do," he said.
Ideas for a walk were pitched, but Watts said he questioned the distance.
