DES MOINES, Iowa —
Des Moines police have released the identity of a pedestrian who died after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 5 over the weekend.
Corey Nathaniel Hiatt, 51, died in the crash. Police say Hiatt was crossing Highway 5 from the north shoulder toward the center median when he was struck by a vehicle.
Investigators say they have ruled out driver impairment as a potential contributing factor, but the investigation remains ongoing.
According to the latest data from the Iowa Department of Transportation , 209 people have died so far this year on Iowa roads. That number is 43 fewer than at the same point in 2024. Over the last five years, an average of 353 people have been killed in statewide crashes annually.
