JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported that BMW is recalling more than 145,000 vehicles over risk of the starter motor failing and overheating leading to an increased risk of fire.

"An overheated starter motor can ignite nearby combustible material in the engine compartment, increasing risk of a fire," the NHTSA says.

The recall affects the following models:

2020 340I

2020-2022 740LI

2020-2025 840I

2019-2020 X5

2020 X6

2019-2020 X7

The NHTSA also says that dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge. Notification letters are expected to be mailed Nov. 17, 2025. Owners may also contact BMW customer service. Vehicle Identification Numbers affected by the recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting Nov. 17.
