KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) - Last year, Candice Hilton made the decision to homeschool her daughter. She felt the public school structure didn't provide the flexibility and enrichment her daughter needed.
Hilton, a former public school teacher, started the Hilton Horizons Academy, a K-12 "hybrid microschool" that offers programming to support homeschooled students. The academy teaches core courses, such as reading and math, along with enrichment courses, such as STEM, art and Spanish.
"We have our abstract artist who comes in and teaches art classes," said Hilton. "We have small town makers who comes in and teaches STEM, and we also bring in like local community members.
