NEW YORK — The Yankees are still alive.

In the second barn burner in a row against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees were able to stave off elimination in the American League Wild Card Series.

It was Austin Wells’ go-ahead RBI single down the right-field line in the bottom of the eighth that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 victory.

Here are a few observations from another back-and-forth battle between these two bitter rivals.

Better bullpen faltered

Red Sox manager Alex Cora used a quick hook with his starter Brayan Bello on Wednesday night, pulling the right-hander after only 2 1/3 innings. It was a huge risk to have his bullpen get 20 outs, but calculated, considering Boston had the best ‘pen in the American League during the regular season.
